Choosing a digital agency is less about picking the flashiest website and more about finding a team whose way of thinking fits your business. The wrong choice costs months; the right one compounds for years. Here is how to evaluate one properly.
Start with the problem, not the deliverable
Before you compare agencies, write down what you actually need to change: more qualified leads, a clearer brand, a faster site, a product that finally ships. Agencies that lead with a fixed package rarely ask this question. Agencies that lead with your objective usually do better work, because scope follows strategy instead of the other way around.
How to read a portfolio
A portfolio shows taste, but you are hiring for judgement. When you look at past projects, ask:
- What was the brief, and did the result answer it?
- Is the work consistent across projects, or is one case an outlier?
- Do the case studies explain decisions, or only show screenshots?
- Would this approach survive being applied to your sector?
Depth matters more than volume. Three projects explained well tell you more than thirty thumbnails.
Questions for the first call
- Who will actually do the work, and who is on the call to sell it?
- How do you handle scope changes once we start?
- What does a typical week look like — how often will we talk?
- What happens after launch: handover, training, ongoing support?
- Can we talk to a past client?
Clear, specific answers are a good sign. Vague reassurance is not.
Warning signs
- Guaranteed rankings or traffic numbers. No one can honestly promise these.
- A quote before anyone has understood your goals.
- Design that looks impressive but the team cannot explain.
- No plan for what happens after go-live.
- Communication that is already slow during the sales phase.
Fit is a real criterion
You will spend weeks or months in close contact with this team. Do they listen? Do they push back when you are wrong, or just agree? Do they explain trade-offs instead of hiding them? A capable agency you cannot talk to will still produce a frustrating project.
In short
Hire for judgement and communication, verified through real work and real references. If you want to see how we approach web, brand and content projects, tell us what you are trying to change and we will be honest about whether we are the right fit.
