A website is not a printed brochure. It runs on software that keeps changing underneath it, in an environment of browsers, devices and search engines that also keep changing. Left alone, a site does not stay still — it slowly drifts out of working order.
What degrades if you do nothing
- Security. Platforms and plugins get vulnerabilities. Unpatched sites are compromised by automated scans, not targeted attacks — being small is not protection.
- Compatibility. Browser updates, new phone sizes and changed third-party scripts break things that worked at launch.
- Content accuracy. Prices, team, services and links go stale. Wrong information erodes trust faster than dated design.
- Performance. Added images, scripts and tracking accumulate. Sites get slower unless someone watches the weight.
- Search visibility. Broken links, crawl errors and unaddressed Search Console warnings quietly cost rankings.
A sensible routine
Monthly
- Apply security and platform updates, then check the site still works.
- Verify backups exist and can actually be restored.
- Scan for broken links and fix them.
Quarterly
- Review Search Console: coverage, Core Web Vitals, manual actions.
- Check performance on a real mid-range phone.
- Review the content that matters most and update anything stale.
Yearly
- Audit the whole site against its current goals.
- Review third-party scripts and remove what is no longer used.
- Decide whether targeted improvements are due (see when to redesign your website).
In short
Neglect is not free — it is a bill that arrives later as a hack, a broken checkout, or a slow slide in traffic. A light monthly routine prevents almost all of it. We offer this as ongoing support after building a site; ask us what a maintenance plan would cover.
